44-L
Eliza, c.1860

Turkish costume. From original dress of Miss Eliza Wilson of Menomonie, WI, as documented in Wisconsin Women in the War. The dress is light brown, no crinoline, and reaches half way between the knee and ankle. The upper sleeve is loose and gathered at the wrist. Pantalettes of same color, wide, but gathered tight around the ankle. This vivandiere dress is no hinderance to rapid movements; fast walking is a graceful exercise, while the slow inevitable strut of crinoline appears awkward to the lady dressed in army costume.
Incl. sizes 6-16.

Hanna, c.1861

From the original dress of Hannah Ewbank of Marquette, WI, as documented in Wisconsin Women in the War. Pattern includes Zouave jacket, skirt, pants and vest. Jacket was of blue merino, trimmed with military buttons and gold lace. Skirt was scarlet merino, trimmed with blue and gold lace. White pants and vest. A number of regiments raised at the beginning of the Civil War were patterned on the French Colonial Zouave Regiments from North Africa. The vivandiere traveled with the regiment, tending the soldiers in battle, and serving drinks from her small keg. She wears a straw hat with a black ribbon and ostrich plume. Her waist belt and pistol holster are of black leather, as are her shoes. Both vivandieres and the colorful Zouave uniforms were most popular during the beginning of the war.
